Assisting Life through Inspired Learning

The Vancouver Island Crisis Society is pleased to present once again the ASIST workshop on June 22 and 23, 2017, in Nanaimo

Winner of the 2009 Culture of Peace Award, as part of the United Nations’ Decade of a Culture of Peace initiative, the popular ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, version 11) workshop is presented once again by the Vancouver Island Crisis Society's ASIST Master Trainers in Nanaimo. It takes place on June 22 and 23, 2017, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on both days. This skills-building workshop prepares caregivers of all kinds to provide suicide first aid interventions, described as Life Assisting.

Professionals, volunteers, and other helpers need to know how to help persons with thoughts of suicide in ways that increase their suicide safety. As an ASIST-trained first aid intervention caregiver, you are better able to:

  • Identify people who have thoughts of suicide;

  • Understand how your beliefs and attitudes can affect suicide interventions;

  • Seek a shared understanding of the reasons for thoughts of suicide and the reasons for living;

  • Review current risk and develop a plan to increase safety from suicidal behavior for an agreed amount of time;

  • Follow up on all safety commitments, accessing further help as needed.

ASIST learners share their learning experiences:

"Fostered a level of hopefulness and increased confidence in assisting someone who is at risk of suicide."

"A great course with wonderful educators." "Really enjoyed the encouraging, positive and safe environment fostered by the two instructors." "Wonderful experience. Great tools."
